MATTHEW J. ANDERSON

Dr. Matthew J. Anderson, Ph.D./FEA currently serves as the associate dean for diversity and inclusion for the Broad College of Michigan State University. He is also the Broad College Faculty Excellence Advocate, administering faculty orientation sessions, and assisting in faculty hiring and mentoring efforts.  He has also been involved in efforts designed to assist international students in transitioning into the Broad College environment (e.g., developing sessions on using the Pinyin system to pronounce Chinese names, and has sponsored tailgates for international students to attend football and basketball games).

Dr. Anderson has also been deeply involved with the KPMG Foundation PhD Project, designed – in its own words, “to change the mix of faces at the front of classrooms . . . nationwide,” in business schools.   He is also a member of the PhD Project Hall of Fame –  recognition of a long-term, substantive commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the accounting profession.
Dr. Anderson is a past recipient of a Michigan State University Excellence in Diversity award, and was an inaugural winner of the national Ernst & Young Inclusive Excellence Award.  He was also the education recipient of the Jason Richardson Foundation “Saluting Greatness” award – based on service to the teaching profession and diversity and inclusion efforts in the accounting discipline.  Dr. Anderson began work in the DEI area as an undergrad at his alma mater, Kalamazoo College, where he was one of the founders of Volunteers for Children, a mentoring organization for inner-city youth.  He is also a past president of the Black Faculty, Staff and Administrators Association of Michigan State University.
Currently, Dr. Anderson serves on the board of Haven House, a local family-oriented homeless shelter, where he is treasurer.  He is also on an advisory board focused on diversity and inclusion of the Honors College of Michigan State University.  He was recently appointed as the inaugural director focusing on diversity and inclusion for the American Accounting Association.
